The Turn in English Writing 英文における起承転結

I’m not used to write in English, to be honest.

正直言って、英語で書くことには慣れていない。

Since my major was American literature, I'm relatively comfortable with reading.

専攻がアメリカ文学だったので、読むことには比較的抵抗がない。

I like reading a lot, actually.

というより、読むのは大好きだ。

It’s such a nice experience to read great novels in its original language.

偉大な小説をもとの言葉で読めるというのはなんて素晴らしいことだろうと思う。

I loved its rhythms, nuances, wordplay, and rugged feelings of sentences.

言葉のリズム、ニュアンス、ダジャレ、そして文章そのものの、ざらりとした感触を愛してやまない。

However, I’ve been struggled to write my own things in English, as I’m proving it right now.

けれども、自分ので英文を書くとなると、いつも苦戦してきたし、そのことは今見てもらっても分かる通りだ。

It is something totally different from reading.

書くことと読むこととはぜんぜん違う。

It is active (reading is passive), needs more concentration, and requires more knowledge.

書くことは能動的だし（読むことは受動的だ）、ずっと集中しなくちゃだし、知識も必要だ。

What I’m not familiar with is, its formula.

私が苦手なもの、それは書き方の形式である。

In other words, structures.

別な言い方をすると、構成。

Writing in Japanese has several forms such as 序破急 (Jo-Ha-Kyu, introduction, development, and finale) or 起承転結(Ki-Shou-Ten-Ketsu, introduction, development, turn, and conclusion).

日本語で書くときには、序破急とか、起承転結とかいったいくつかの形式がある。 

Japanese people learn these structures during their education process, and they consider these forms as a natural and mighty plot for writing which is, of course, not true.

日本人はそういった構成を学校教育の中で学ぶし、それらを自然で万能な形式だと思うわけだけれど、もちろんそんなことはない。

I know these structures are developed among Chinese-influenced Kanji culture area.

こういう構成というのは中国の影響を受けた漢字文化圏で発展してきた。

Thus using these for English writing wouldn’t be appropriate, but I did it for last few articles.

それゆえ、英文を書くときにそれらを用いるのは不適当なんだろうけれど、前の投稿でそれをやってしまっている。

I wonder why. I guess I jsut couldn’t help it.

なんでだろうな。なんかついやっちゃうんだよな。

I have heard that this type of writing is not very kind for foreign readers, since they are not trained to read such sentences.

こういう構成は、そういう文を読む練習をしていない外国の読み手にたいしては不親切だと聞いたことがある。

It is said that 転(turn) doesn’t make sense to them.

彼らにとっては、「転」の部分が、理解に苦しむんだそうだ。

To be serious about it, it is no wonder that the turn makes people puzzled when they expect to read one coherent story.

考えてみれば、彼らが一貫した話を読もうとしているときに、「転」に混乱させられてしまうというのは確かにありそうだ。

Asian may understand elegance of turn, but for other people turn is just a side story which doesn’t have anything to do with main theme.

アジアの人なら「転」の風流も感じられるかもしれないが、そうでない人にとっては、「転」なんざメインテーマと関係ないこぼれ話に過ぎない。

I pretend that I understand such formula is inappropriate for writing in English, though I forget it regularly.

私自身、起承転結が英文で書くときには適切でないことをわかっているフリをしているが、しょっちゅう忘れている。

I feel it natural.

私にとってはそれが自然に感じてしまうのだ。

I always hesitate to say conclusion first, and feel difficult to explain it later.

結論を最初に書いて、後から理由を説明するというのも、未だにためらいがある。
